4th HD video from Saint Barth – Some sunsets

Some of the fantastic sunsets we have seen last year, from the villa Ella.

In about 10 days, we will there again, so I don’t know if I will publish new ones or not till then ;-)

Let’s see!

As usual, you should have a look at the high-res version here.

3rd HD video from Saint Barth – Colombier beach

After the short presentation of the the villa Ella, a third HD video about Saint Barth, this time concerning one of our preferred beach, Colombier. One of the must of the island and a marvelous location for snorkeling!

As usual, you should also have a look at the high-res version here.

And still not the last video.

The next one will be for Laurent.

2nd HD video from Saint Barth – Villa Ella

As mentioned in this post, I am publishing some HD video (720p, i.e. a 1280×720 resolution) on SmugMug.

Below, the second one (embedded in DVD quality). Topic is still Saint Barth, this time, with some views of the villa we were in, and the fantastic panoramic views on the Saint Barth airport and the Saint Jean Bay.

You should also have a look at the high-res version here.

HD Video from Saint Barth

I have published my first HD video (720p, i.e. a 1280×720 resolution) on SmugMug, with our last Saint Barth winter break in February 2008 as “topic”. I will continue to regularly publish some short sessions about this travel in the coming time.

The embedded version below is the so-called DVD version (640×480 resolution).

You may like to have a look at the HD version here.

I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 as a video editing software (yes, I have a license…) and my Sony Handycam HDR-HC3.

The music used to illustrate the video is coming from ccMixter.org, very nice source for good-quality Creative Commons licensed tracks!

Hurricane Omar: Saint Barth now recovering…

via Journal de Saint Barth (pdf)

So, the Omar hurricane is now away from Saint Barth (about 300 km), strength decreasing very rapidly.

Some pictures below from Saint Barth during and after the hurricane.

Le Journal de Saint Barth, the weekly newspaper from the island (in French), was publishing the first information about the damages:

  • Nobody injured
  • Wind of 140 km/h and about 50mm of rain within some hours, hurricane didn’t pass directly on Saint Barth but about 50 km away in the night of Wednesday to Thursday
  • The real problem was the extremely strong swell coming from the SW, which is a very atypical orientation
  • Production of water stopped, it will take weeks to reach the normal production again (one meter of water in the plant!)
  • People can again circulate all around the island, roads are re-opened
  • Schools re-opened on coming Monday
  • Harbor is heavily hit, wharfs destroyed, 5 boats have sunk, thereof 2 in the harbor!
  • The Corossol, Shell and Colombier beaches seem to be very affected by the strong swell, part of the sand is just gone there…
  • Airport re-opened

via Tim, living in Saint Barth, and moderator of the “Insiders’ guide to St. Barths” forum

The little airplanes soaring into the sky all day here were a perfect metaphor for SBH’s soaring efforts toward a speedy recovery from Hurricane Omar. Government services returned as both trash and recycling were picked up on schedule this morning. Gustavia, the hardest hit, was hopping with activity that was not slowed at all by this afternoon’s rain:

  • Dead vehicles that were Omarred were being hauled quickly away by wreckers.
  • The portion of the dock not totally Omarred was being removed by a crane.
  • Trucks full of rocks, trucks full of debris, trucks full of muck(muck-trucks) were scurrying from Gustavia to unload their loads and return for more.
  • The veggies in Omar’s soup(aka seaweed) were being fished out of the harbor by a half dozen boats filled with energetic fishermen using rakes. The boats were being piled high with the grass and then unloaded elsewhere.
  • Firemen were spraying down and sweeping the remaining muck from Gustavia’s streets.

There will be many tasks remaining, but the big question right now seems to be whether the cleanup will be complete by party time Saturday evening. Even Shell Beach, which has lost a lot of sand, doesn’t look near as bad today after the water receded to a more normal level. It gives one a good feeling all over to see such positive energy, a characteristic that has always been the trademark of St. Barth’s self-reliant people.

Good luck to everybody there for the coming days!

Saint Barth being hit by hurricane Omar

Wow, I have heard at the radio this morning that Saint Barth and Saint Martin are being hit by the Omar hurricane

Omar seems to be at about 115 km away from the islands, and is now in the category 3 (110-130mph, i.e. 175-210km/h), with a 30km/h movement (actually very strange, from SW to NE, which is not the “normal” movement of hurricanes in this region…), accelerating and strengthening!

The alert-level is now “purple” (the 5th from 6), which corresponds to the so-called “confinement stage”. People are forced to stay in shelters or at home if it has been prepared for (reliable doors and windows closings).

To all my friends & people there: take care!

Back from St Barth

So, we are back since last Friday. As usual, the “landing” is quite difficult after 2 weeks on this incredible island. And not just because of the jet lag…

I would like to share with you 8 pictures from our trip. And no, I don’t know why 8, but it sounds good ;-)

Off to Saint Barth till August 22

Dear friends, colleagues, partners, customers and competitors … and readers :-)

I am off to St Barth with my wife and son till August 22. The first time for us there … during the summer!

If there will be no strike, if the weather will be ok (no hurricane, it is the season now), if there will be no issue with the plane, etc., we will be again in St Barth tomorrow, exactly there:

villa st barth

Temperature:

  • Day : 34°C
  • Night : 26°C
  • Ocean : 29°C

This is actually the case only if we don’t have any hurricane :-)

I will publish some videos & pictures there, stay tuned.

Have a good time and take care!

St Barth 2007 – Part III

With some delay, the third post about our trip to St Barth in 2007. I have to go on! In now 12 (!) days, we will fly there gain.

Do not forget your sunglasses, before having a look at the pictures.

The beaches

What is interesting at St Barth is that there are so many beaches, which are so different from each other. If you stay 2 weeks, you are able to visit one different beach per day.

In 2007, we were at the following:

  • St Jean Bay West (near the airport)

IMG_4526

  • St Jean Bay East (great for kids, a lot of families are present there)

  • Colombier. It is the first time that we were there because you have to walk about 30′ on a quite steep and narrow walking road. It was not really possible before because of our son (he was 5 last year). But, what for a view during the walk! And the beach is absolutely fantastic…

St Barth 2007 – Part II

IMG_4665

I have published my last post about Saint Barth for a while… It was exactly on May 28, 2007. Quite a long time ago! On the other side, in 25 days, we will be again in Saint Barth for about 3 weeks. So, I should really now begin to enter this “period”, step-by-step.

I know that I am making some of you quite nervous with my “Saint Barth” posts. Sorry guys, nobody is forcing you to read them ;-)

In the Part I, I have introduced our travel and talked about the “terrible” weather there ;-). In the coming posts, I will write about our villa (part II), the beaches (arrgggg, part III), the restaurants and the shopping (part IV), the fauna and flora (part V), the harbor and some boats (part VI), some sunsets (part VII) and a conclusion (part VIII).

If you would like to have a look at my flickr-set about this travel, you can go there. 113 pictures, also available in their original size (3072×2304).

The villa TEO

Last year (in 2007), we have decided not to go in a hotel as the first two times (Hotel La Banane and François Plantation). Not that these hotels were bad or something like that. This time, we wanted to test a stay with a villa renting. There are quite a lot of possibilities and different renting agencies. We have decided us for the “historical” real estate company of St Barth, called SiBarth. Huge choice of villas on the wimco website, very precise descriptions which correspond to the reality. Very good service.

We were at the villa TEO, which is quite new and absolutely beautiful.

Top ten reasons to come and stay in villa TEO:

  1. It is very comfortable, charming and private
  2. The views on the ocean, the boats, the Corossol Bay and the offshore islands are just TERRIFIC. We are missing them…
  3. The infinity pool is just great! So cool in the afternoon after some hours on the beach.
  4. The wood terrace is amazing, open, with dramatic 180° views.
  5. The sunsets are just … spectacular! And different every day.
  6. The little garden is welcoming you, with beautiful and colorful flowers, and its very nice fountain.
  7. The BBQ (a Weber…) is just great.
  8. We have seen one iguana (a grey one) many times. As some colibris. Cool experience.
  9. The kitchen and overall furnitures are modern, stylish, comfortable.
  10. Thanks to the orientation of the villa, the whole terrace is “under the sun” about the whole day.
